Gas Fireplaces & Inserts

Gas fireplaces and fireplace inserts offer efficient, reliable heat with a realistic flame — and can serve as a meaningful source of backup heating. We carry Kingsman, Continental, and Napoleon gas fireplaces and inserts.

Electric Fireplaces

Electric fireplaces are an increasingly popular choice for homeowners who want the ambience and supplemental heat of a fireplace without gas lines or venting requirements. They’re straightforward to install, safe for any room, and available in a wide range of styles — from wall-mounted units to built-in inserts. We supply and install electric fireplaces to suit any space or budget.

Fireplace Repairs

We diagnose and repair ignition issues, pilot light problems, heating failures, and control malfunctions on most gas fireplace makes and models. For electric fireplaces, we service heating element failures, blower issues, and electrical faults. If your fireplace won’t light, won’t stay lit, or isn’t heating properly, give us a call.

Gas Fireplace — Does It Need a Repair? Check These Items First

Before calling a technician, a few quick checks may resolve the issue.

  • Is the gas supply on? Confirm the gas shutoff valve near the fireplace is open (handle parallel to the pipe = open). If other gas appliances aren’t working either, contact Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427.
  • Is the pilot light lit? Many gas fireplaces have a standing pilot light. If it’s out, follow the manufacturer’s relight instructions. If the pilot won’t stay lit, that’s typically a thermocouple or thermopile issue — call us.
  • Is the wall switch or remote working? Check that the wall switch is on and that remote control batteries aren’t dead. A faulty switch is a common and inexpensive fix.
  • Is the glass heavily sooted? Heavy soot buildup can sometimes be mistaken for a performance issue. Fireplace glass can be cleaned with a dedicated gas fireplace glass cleaner — never use regular household cleaners.
  • Do you smell gas? If you detect a gas odour, do not attempt to light the fireplace. Leave your home immediately and call Enbridge Gas from outside at 1-866-763-5427, then call 911. Do not re-enter until emergency services give the all-clear.

Electric Fireplace — Does It Need a Repair? Check These Items First

Before calling a technician, a few quick checks may identify the issue.

  • Is it plugged in, and is the outlet working? Check that the unit is firmly plugged in and that the outlet has power. Test the outlet with another device. Some electric fireplaces also have a built-in reset button — check your owner’s manual.
  • Has a circuit breaker tripped? Electric fireplaces draw meaningful current, especially when the heater is running. Check your panel and confirm the breaker for that circuit is fully on.
  • Are the flame and heat functions separate? Most electric fireplaces allow the flame effect and heater to operate independently. If one isn’t working but the other is, that narrows down the issue considerably.
  • Is there a visible error code or indicator light? Some electric fireplace models display fault indicators. Check your owner’s manual for what the code means before calling.

If you’ve worked through this list and your fireplace still isn’t operating properly, give us a call. Markham Heating and Air Conditioning is ready to help — we service all major brands.

Fireplace Maintenance & Tune-Up

GAS FIREPLACE

Annual gas fireplace maintenance is recommended by manufacturers and required by many warranty programs. A properly serviced fireplace burns cleanly, operates safely, and performs reliably when you need it most. It’s also the best way to catch worn parts — like thermocouples, thermopiles, and ignition components — before they fail mid-season.

Here are a few items covered in our gas fireplace inspection:

Inspection Item Why It Matters
Pilot light & ignition system check Ensures the fireplace lights reliably and ignition components are in good condition
Thermocouple / thermopile check These safety components shut off gas if the pilot goes out — worn parts are a leading cause of no-heat calls
Burner & flame appearance inspection Checks for proper flame colour, pattern, and combustion quality
Gas pressure check Verifies correct gas pressure at the appliance for safe, efficient operation
Venting & flue inspection Confirms exhaust gases are venting safely and the flue is unobstructed
Glass cleaning & gasket inspection Cleans the glass panel and checks the door seal for integrity
Log set & media inspection Checks the condition of ceramic logs, rock media, or glass beads for damage or displacement

ELECTRIC FIREPLACE

Electric fireplaces benefit from periodic servicing too — cleaning the heating element, inspecting the blower motor, and checking electrical connections. A quick annual inspection keeps the unit operating safely and efficiently for years to come.

When you book a tune-up with Markham Heating and Air Conditioning, a fully licensed technician will inspect your fireplace from top to bottom. We service all major gas and electric fireplace brands including Kingsman, Continental, and Napoleon.

Here are a few items covered in our electric fireplace inspection:

Inspection Item Why It Matters
Heating element inspection Checks for damage or wear that reduces heat output or poses an electrical safety risk
Blower motor & airflow check Ensures the fan is distributing heat effectively and operating quietly
Electrical connections & wiring Inspects internal wiring, connections, and the power cord for safety
Flame effect mechanism Checks the LED or optical flame system for proper operation and appearance
Controls & remote operation Confirms all controls — manual, remote, and timer functions — are working correctly

A full written report of our findings is available after every tune-up, so you always know exactly where your fireplace stands.

Why it matters: Regular tune-ups help catch worn parts before they fail, keep your system running efficiently, and protect against safety risks. Staying current with annual maintenance can also be a requirement for keeping your equipment warranty valid.
