Furnace Repairs

During a harsh Ontario winter, nothing is worse than a furnace that refuses to run! Luckily, Markham Heating & Air Conditioning services most makes and models, so if you are in need of prompt repairs give us a call!

Is Your Furnace Acting Up? Run Through This Checklist First

We’re always ready to dispatch one of our skilled furnace repair technicians to your home — but before you call, this quick checklist might save you time and money.

  • Is your thermostat set to “Heat”? It sounds simple, but it’s easy to forget to switch the thermostat from cooling to heating mode when the seasons change. Double-check the setting before anything else.
  • Is your thermostat set to “Heat”? It sounds simple, but it’s easy to forget to switch the thermostat from cooling to heating mode when the seasons change. Double-check the setting before anything else.
  • Does your furnace filter need to be replaced? A clogged filter is one of the most frequent causes of heating problems. If you haven’t replaced yours in the last three months, it may be restricting airflow enough to affect performance — or trigger a shutdown altogether.
  • Has your circuit breaker tripped? Your furnace runs on a dedicated circuit, and breakers can trip without warning. Head to your electrical panel and confirm the breaker controlling your furnace is switched on. If it’s in the middle position, flip it fully off and then back on.
  • Do you smell gas or something unusual? If you detect a rotten egg or sulfur-like odour near your furnace, do not touch any switches or appliances. Leave your home immediately, leaving the door open behind you, and call your gas provider and emergency services provider if necessary from outside or a neighbour’s phone — Do not re-enter your home until emergency services give the all-clear. This is not a situation to troubleshoot yourself.
  • Are your exterior vents clear? Snow, ice, debris, or even small animals can obstruct the intake and exhaust vents on the outside of your home, causing your furnace to shut down or run poorly. Take a quick look outside if it’s safe to do so.
  • Is your condensate drain line clear? High-efficiency furnaces produce condensation that drains through a small plastic tube. If that line becomes clogged, your furnace may shut itself off as a safety precaution. Check that the drain line and any connected tubing aren’t kinked, blocked, or frozen.

Furnace Maintenance and Tune-Up

A furnace tune-up is preventative maintenance designed to keep your heating system running safely, efficiently, and reliably — before small issues turn into costly repairs. Think of it like an oil change for your furnace: regular servicing extends the life of your equipment, helps maintain manufacturer warranty requirements, and gives you peace of mind heading into the heating season (or anytime during, or towards the end.

When you book a tune-up with Markham Heating and Air Conditioning, a fully licensed technician will perform a thorough inspection of your system — checking that your furnace is generating and circulating enough warm air to keep your home comfortable, and doing so safely. We service all major furnace brands.

Here are a few items covered in our 18-point inspection:

Inspection Item Why It Matters
Thermostat operation Confirms your system responds correctly and heats to the right temperature
Air filter inspection & cleaning A dirty filter is one of the leading causes of furnace inefficiency and breakdowns
Heat exchanger inspection Cracks in the heat exchanger can allow carbon monoxide to enter your home
Gas pressure check & adjustment Improper gas pressure affects efficiency, performance, and safety
Carbon monoxide testing Measures CO levels at the furnace and exhaust to protect your household
Flame sensor & igniter check Ensures your furnace lights reliably every time it's called to heat
Blower motor inspection Verifies warm air is being circulated properly throughout your home

A full written report of our findings is available after every tune-up, so you always know exactly where your equipment stands.

Why it matters
Regular tune-ups help catch worn parts before they fail, keep your system running at peak efficiency, and can lower your energy bills during the months you need cooling most. Staying current with annual maintenance can also be a requirement for keeping your equipment warranty valid.
