Built for Ontario winters
A heat pump that's great in July can still struggle in January.
A heat pump has to do two jobs. If it’s undersized, or not built for cold climates, the backup heat ends up doing most of the work in winter and your bills go up. If it’s oversized, it short cycles in summer and leaves the house feeling damp.
We plan for both seasons from the start. We work out how much heating and cooling your home actually needs, check your ductwork, and recommend the setup that fits: ducted, ductless, or a hybrid that works with your furnace.
Which setup is right for you?
Three ways to add a heat pump to your home
Hybrid (dual-fuel)
A heat pump paired with a natural gas furnace (Enbridge or another utility). The heat pump handles most of the year and the furnace takes over automatically on the coldest days.
Ducted heat pump
Replaces your central air conditioner and uses your existing ductwork to heat and cool the whole house. Paired with electric heat strips (auxiliary heat) for the coldest days, which are added as an extra.
Ductless mini-split
Wall-mounted units for homes without ducts, additions or rooms that never feel right. It can be your only heat source, or work alongside a natural gas furnace as an additional one.
Signs it’s time
Good times to switch to a heat pump, or replace the one you have
Your AC is getting old
If your air conditioner is due for replacement, a heat pump costs a little more and adds efficient heating on top of cooling.
Repairs keep adding up
When an older heat pump or AC needs another expensive fix, that money often goes further toward a new system.
One season always falls short
Fine in summer but weak in winter, or the other way around, usually means the system doesn’t fit the house.
Bills keep climbing
An aging system, or backup heat running too often, shows up on your hydro or gas bill first.
Some rooms never feel right
A cold bedroom over the garage or a hot upstairs can often be fixed with a ductless unit for that space.
It uses R-22 refrigerant
Older systems that run on R-22 are expensive to recharge now that it’s been phased out. Replacing is usually the better value.

Heat pump installation questions
Do heat pumps work in Ontario winters?
Yes. Cold-climate heat pumps keep heating well below freezing. On the coldest days, a paired natural gas furnace or electric auxiliary heat strips take over automatically, so the house stays warm.
Do I need to get rid of my furnace?
No. Many of our customers keep their gas furnace and add a heat pump as a hybrid system. The heat pump does most of the work and the furnace covers the coldest stretches.
Are there rebates for heat pumps?
Often, yes. Amounts depend on your home, your fuel type and the equipment. We’re an enrolled Home Renovation Savings contractor and will tell you what applies before you decide.
How much does a heat pump cost?
It depends on the type (ducted, ductless or hybrid), the size your home needs and the model. After a free in-home visit, you get options in writing with the full installed price and any rebates noted.
Will a heat pump lower my bills?
It can, but it depends on your home, your insulation and gas and hydro rates. We’ll give you an honest picture for your house rather than a one-size-fits-all number.
How long does installation take?
Most heat pump installs take one to two days. Ductless systems with several indoor units can take a little longer. We’ll give you a timeline with your quote.
