Is Your Heat Pump Acting Up? Run Through This Checklist First
Before calling a technician, take a few minutes to check these items — it could save you the cost of a service call.
- Is your thermostat set correctly? In heating season, confirm it’s set to Heat, and the temperature is above the current room temperature. In summer, confirm it’s set to Cool. The system won’t run if there’s nothing to call for.
- Has your circuit breaker tripped? Heat pumps run on a dedicated circuit — sometimes two (one for the indoor unit, one for the outdoor unit). Check your panel and confirm both are fully on.
- Is your air filter dirty? A clogged filter restricts airflow and can cause the system to shut down or underperform. If it’s been more than three months, start here.
- Is there ice on the outdoor unit? Some frost during heating mode is normal — the unit defrosts itself periodically. If it’s heavily iced over and not clearing, call us. In cooling mode, any ice on the unit signals a problem.
- Are your indoor vents open? Confirm supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture. Restricted airflow puts strain on the system and can trigger a shutdown.
- Is the outdoor unit clear? Make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around the unit and no debris packed against the coils. A gentle rinse with a garden hose can help if the fins look dirty.
